Palm Jumeirah is the reclaimed island off Jumeirah, laid out as a trunk, sixteen fronds and a surrounding crescent, and extending about 6.5km into the Gulf. The split matters if you live here: the apartment buildings sit almost entirely on the trunk, while the fronds are villas with private beach frontage and the crescent holds the resorts.
Around eighty thousand people live on the island, a mix of families, professionals and long-term residents drawn by the beaches and the space. The monorail and Nakheel Mall serve the trunk. The practical drawbacks are the ones any island has: a single road on and off at the base, which residents feel every rush hour, and beach access that varies building by building rather than being shared across the island.
